Growing up, I was very fortunate to have a clear path knowing that after HS, I was going to attend college. As the child of two immigrants who came to the US for a better life and to avoid communism, there was never any doubt that I would be the first to go to college in my family. As I was approaching the end of my four-year undergraduate program, the economy was in a poor state, and I wasn’t quite sure what my path might become. And then, I began to hear a term called “lifelong learning”, introducing me to the fact that when we are passionate about self-improvement, we can continue to learn in less structured informal ways.
How we work, the technology that we employ in the modern work world has changed drastically over my career. We owe it to ourselves to learn to stay current, to help us work more effectively and to be more marketable. Attending professional meetings and conferences is a great way to learn “best practices” in your industry or field. But it’s not just about acquiring knowledge but also expanding our learning through experiences with others in person or virtually.
Let us know what you are doing to make your learning lifelong. By sharing with us and our other readers, the ideas spawned may encourage others to grow in new ways.
