Important vs. Urgent

· Goal Setting,Time Management,Work Styles,Conflict,Obstacles

When asking a client recently, "How can I better help you?" The quest received from Melvin was “Help us figure out how to get more hours in the day.” My response was you know that no one has figured out how to get more hours in the day (because it can’t be done). We all get the same 24 hours and at work, that amount is much less. To be successful, we need to learn how to make the most of that time. Time is a resource just as are people, money and technology/equipment. Each one needs to be managed effectively to get the best outcome.

To be effective, we must learn how to prioritize our activities for the greatest results. Perhaps, our own definition of these priorities is not aligned with those of our supervisor or our organization. We all waste time every day or use our time on less important things. Knowing what is important versus what is urgent is a skill that could take time (excuse the pun) to master.

How do you decide what is the best thing to do at the moment among the infinite possibilities?
